24" × 18" Mixed media: encaustic wax, acrylic, paper, photographs and Polaroids on premiere wood panel, with maple floating frame.
Start with what the surface does to a face. Some are right there, Alexa at upper left, Vivian cultivating her mushrooms to the right, and Bryan shaving Michael's hair near the center. Others are three passes down and going, legible as posture but not as person. A few have been reduced to a pale shape where somebody used to be. The panel is not composed so much as deposited, and where a face landed in the sequence decides everything about whether you can still reach it. Depth here is not a description of the picture. It is the picture's chronology.
This is what encaustic is for and the artist is running it at full strength. This is a working description of the fuzuls. The field unification zone for uploading layered sentience proposes that a mind can be laid over a mind without either being destroyed, a translucent pass rather than a replacement. That isn't an analogy for encaustic, it is a specification for it. The panel isn't illustrating the technology; it's operating it. The woman at the shuttle launch is under Harrison, or he is under her, and the wax declines to arbitrate. That ambiguity is not the artist failing to resolve an image. It's the output.
