Fashion's fundamental unit has never been the garment; it is the line, the silouhette a body cuts against light, the thing a season is remembered by long after its colors and closures are forgotten. The trade has known this for as long as it has drawn: the working sketch reduces the human to an elongated shadow so that the shape can be judged before the cloth exists. Fire simply refuses to complete the drawing. Eyes closed, heads tipped back, one mouth open in the middle of the composition in a rapture that is either the music or the chemistry or the fusion of both. The Directive did not have to teach these young people how to leave themselves, they were doing it voluntarily, on a dance floor, every weekend. Shadow in the Void is not a portrait of the field trip, but Harrison's own attempt to paint it.  He begun it compulsively after the jump and his first therapy session with Vivian Chen.  It should be read the way we read any object made by someone trying to discharge an experience too large for language: not as a finished statement but as evidence of a mind working on its own wound. The obsessive scratching in the surface isn't a technique borrowed for effect. It's the record of how many times he went back in.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBut the figure is not glorified. It is dissolving. Across the dark body drift pinholes of silver and purple, the lights he described eating away at the shadow as it crossed toward the future form, scattered over the torso and shoulders like a constellation, or like a body being taken apart one point at a time. This is the panel's terror, stated quietly.
